Send Attachments Securely

When you send an attachment, Send-It Confidential breaks the file up into small pieces, encrypts each piece individually and stores each encrypted piece separately in a secure database on the Send-It Confidential server.  The attachment no longer exists as a file until an authorized user downloads it and views it subject to the access permissions set by the sender and at this time the file is re assembled.

When you send an attachment, you choose whether it can be printed, copied from, saved or edited. Send-It Confidential offers the following security levels for attachments:

Locked Down – The Locked Down permission provides the highest level of security. A locked down file can be viewed but can’t be edited, printed, saved or copied from. Locked Down files are opened in the Send-It Confidential Viewer, which decrypts the file in memory for additional security. When the file is closed Send-It Confidential clears it from memory, leaving the file securely encrypted on the recipient’s drive. There are no decrypted temp files on the drive at any time, so the recipient cannot subvert security by opening a temp file.

Optional watermarks can be used to provide an extra level of security.

The locked down security level can be used with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and .xps files.

Read Only – The Read Only permission is less secure than the Locked Down permission. A Read Only file can be viewed, printed and copied from but the file cannot be edited. Read Only files are opened in the Send-It Confidential Viewer, which decrypts the file in memory for additional security. When the file is closed Send-It Confidential clears it from memory, leaving the file securely encrypted on the recipient’s drive. There are no decrypted temp files on the drive at any time, so the recipient cannot subvert the security by opening a temp file.

Optional watermarks can be used to provide an extra level of security.

The read only security level can be used with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and .xps files.

Read/Annotate – The Read/Annotate permission has the same level of security as the Read Only permission with some additional functionality - the recipient will be able to create “sticky note” comments in the document. These comments will be saved in the recipient’s downloaded, encrypted copy of the file and will only be visible to the recipient. They will not change the central copy of the file that is downloaded by other recipients.

Read/Write – The Read/Write permission is less secure than Locked Down, Read/Annotate or Read Only and provides “friendly” security. When a recipient opens a Read/Write file, the file is decrypted and then opened using the relevant application - Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. After being opened, the file will remain in an unsecure state until the user chooses to secure it again by right clicking the file in Send-It Confidential and choosing “Secure”. This encrypts the file again, securing it from theft by anyone who steals or gains access to the recipient’s computer.

Read/Write files can be viewed, edited, printed, copied and copied from. If a recipient makes changes to a Read/Write file, the changes will be saved in the recipient’s downloaded copy of the file and will only be visible to the recipient. The central copy of the file that is downloaded by other recipients will not be changed.

The Read/Write security level can be used with any type of file.

Full Control – The Full Control permission has the lowest level of security. Full Control files are secured during transmission and on the Send-It Confidential server but are not secured once they reach their destination. The recipient can download them to any folder they choose and then use them as they would any other file.

The Full Control security level can be used with any type of file.
